Last Saturday, the boys and girls cross country team competed in the CAC League Meet Championships at Essex Tech in Danvers.
The girls team were trying to be the first Chelsea team to ever win the dual and league meet championship in the same year. In the large school division Amanda Dias was the winner followed closely by teammate Yarid Deras and Jocelyn Poste in third. Shawsheen Tech; however, finished fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth to make it a very close meet. Fortunately for Chelsea, Cynthia Mancia finished in eighth place and Karina Avalos was 16th to secure the victory by nine points. Also running well for Chelsea was Marissa Rivera in 20th, Carla Romero in 24th and Stefanie Rodrigues in 25th. This was a great day for the girls. They had a lot of pressure on them coming into the meet, and were able to perform really well. Amanda, Yarid, Jocelyn and Cynthia were able to receive All-Conference. They should be very proud of themselves for how they performed at league meet, and the good news is that our top six girls are all returning next year.
The boys finished the dual season at six and four but all of their losses were very close. So the thinking coming into the meet was that second place would constitute a successful meet for them. Before the boys varsity meet took place, the boys JV meet was run, and Justin Turner ran his best race of the year running 18:39 to win the race handily. Jazmany Reyes was second in the JV race with a time of 19:28.
In the boys varsity race senior captain Jose Leclerc finished his season undefeated with a winning time of 16:53 for the 3.1 mile course, and received the MVP award for winning the league meet. Senior captain Alex Pedrero also received all conference finishing in eighth place running 18:20. Demitrius Martinez was 12th only three seconds off of all conference. Wuilfido Hernandez was 17th and Yosef Ruben was 20th for the boys. The boys finished with 58 points second to Whittier Tech who were the regular-season champs and won with 51 points. This was the best meet the boys ran collectively as a team, in all of the losses they never quite ran up to their capability, but on Saturday they showed how well they could really run as a team. The good news also is that eight of our top eleven boys will be back next year.
This Saturday both the boys and girls will be running in the State Coaches Invitational at Wrentham.
