Last Wednesday, on a day that almost reached ninety degrees, the Chelsea girls cross country team came away with two solid victories. Defeating Greater Lawrence 20-35 and defeating the defending league champions, Academy of Notre Dame 15-49. Junior co-captains Jocelyn Poste and Yarid Deras ran virtually the whole race together and finished second and third respectively. Junior Amanda Dias finished fourth for the lady red devils while Marissa Rivera had close to a four minute personal best to finish in a gritty fifth place. “There were four girls right behind Marissa that she held off and beat today. We have a solid top three and if she can continue to run like that we will be much stronger as a team.” Freshman Kathy Lopez was six seconds behind Rivera to complete the sweep in the two meets. This puts the girls 5-0 so far this season and is putting them in a great position to challenge for a league title this year. The last time the girls won a title was 2010 (league meet champions) and 2011 (10-0 dual meet champions). The girls host Gr. Lowell next week at Admiral’s Hill.
On Saturday at the Frank Kelley Invitational, Yarid Deras finished 9th and medaled in the girls division one race, running a time of 21:56 for the 3.1 mile course. Jocelyn Poste finished in sixteenth place which allowed her to also receive a medal running a time of 22:38, which was a forty six second personal best. Cynthia Mancia ran 14:22 for the 3k race and was 83rd out of 153. Freshman Kathy Lopez finished in 107th place in the fresh/soph 3k race that had over 200 runners in the race.
Last Wednesday the boys lost another close meet this time to Gr. Lawrence by the score of 26-31. Senior captain Jose Leclerc remained undefeated in the CAC with a thirty second victory over the closest Gr. Lawrence runner. Unfortunately for Chelsea, Gr. Lawrence finished second, third and fourth. Chelsea made it close by getting fifth by Wuilfido Hernandez, sixth for Alex Pedrero and seventh for Demetrius Martinez. Chelsea would need to have one more runner to finish eighth to secure a win but Greater Lawrence grabbed the next four spots. “We were competitive today with Gr. Lawrence, it has been a while since we have beaten them. If we had a fifth runner today we would have been able to come away with a win.” Next week the red devils host Greater Lowell for the last home meet of the year.
Last Saturday at the Frank Kelley invitational the boy’s mostly escaped the rain in Wrentham and had a stellar performance by senior co-captain Jose Leclerc. Leclerc went out with the leaders in the Division one boys race and maintained contact with them the whole race and finished third in the one hundred fifty person race to earn a medal. He ran a personal best by exactly one minute from last year’s state meet running 16:51. “Jose had great day today. So far he hasn’t been pushed in a dual meet. Because of him and several others we are running more invitational and state meets this year for some stronger overall competition. We will be running three more times on this course this year including the state meet. It will give everyone a chance to familiarize themselves with this course.” Sophomore Demetrius Martinez finished 60th in the junior/senior division one race running 19:10. Alex Pedrero was eighty first running 19:35. Ronny Lopez ran 20:40. Limilson Tavares ran 11:58 for the 3k finishing 121 out of 312. Yosef Ruben and Jazmany Reyes were 157 and 160 respectively in the same time of 12:15. Rafeal Castillo also ran 12:15 in the junior/senior 3k race.
