From Coach Fay:
Last Saturday eight members of the boy’s and girl’s cross country team competed at the Division 2 state meet at Wrentham. Junior Jose Leclerc improved by fourteen seconds from last week running 17:51 on the 3.1 mile course which is an average of 5:45 per mile. He finished fifty first out of one hundred and fifty runners in the race. This was Jose’s first season of cross country, he improved immensely during this year and was the fastest runner in the CAC at the state meet on Saturday. He will continue to run indoor and outdoor track and hopefully be one of, if not, the best runner in the league next year. Freshman Demitrius Martinez finished in one hundredth place and was only beaten by five other freshmen in the race. He ran 18:40 for 3.1 miles and was just a tick over six minute pace. Senior captain Adriel Cedano ran 19:56 in his last cross country race while Alex Pedrero was right behind in 20:02. Freshmen Abraham Barrientos ran 21:22 while sophomore Wuilfido Hernandez ran 22:03. The boy’s finished in twenty first place as a team. We have five out of our top six back and our top two this year were both top ten in the league. We have to add some more depth and some more running experience and we should be much improved for next year.
In the girls race, sophomore Yarid Deras was on pace to break twenty one minutes on the 5k course but was tripped with just under a mile to go in the race which resulted in her losing over forty seconds in the last mile. The course is a very friendly spectator course and if you move around you can see the runners eight or nine times during the race. Unfortunately we weren’t around when Yarid fell and we originally thought she just faded in the last mile. The race was very crowded and those things do happen now and then. She probably could of have been in the high thirties for placement if she finished strong. It doesn’t diminish though from the fantastic season she has had. She is already the best distance runner in Chelsea high history and will probably break several records this indoor and outdoor season. Sophomore Jocelyn Poste had her best race of the season running 23:21 for the race. Poste is the defending league champion in the eight hundred meters for spring track. We just have to add some depth and we should be more competitive next year as a team.
The cross country team will be running the second annual turkey trot this Saturday (10/19) at 10:00 am at Admiral’s Hill. All runners and walkers are welcome to sign up and run. There is a free t-shirt with a paid entry of twenty five dollars. You can register on the website or just come and register the day of. Gobble, gobble!
