The end of the season is approaching fast!
Last week the boys scored a win over Northeast (5/11/16) with a score of 86 – 49. Bryan Rivas was a double winner in the 400 hurdles (64.62) and the 400 (59.47). He also finished second in the triple jump with a leap of 37’7″. Adriel Cedano was also a double winner in the 100 (11.44) and the triple jump (39’6″). Adriel added a second place in the high jump (5’2″). Senior Jose Aguiar returned from a nagging injury to win the 800 (2:20). Sophomore Luqman Shariff scored his first win of the season in the long jump (17’7″). In the throws senior Luka Braga was a double winner in the shot put (37’11”) and the discus (98’10”). Finishing second in both the shot and the disc was sophomore teammate Nelson Hernandez (35’4″ in shot & 95’8″) in the disc. Scoring two second place performances was junior Nick Ieng in the 200 (24.07) & Javelin (109′). Sophomore Alex Pedrero had a good day taking third in the 400 hurdles ( 71.71) and second in the 110 high hurdles (19.08). Rounding out the scorning was sophomore Jose Leclerc finishing second in the mile (5:17).
On Friday the boys traveled to a much improved Lynn Tech team and lost 94 -54. Top point getters for Chelsea were Luka Braga winning the shot put (39’2″), Nelson Hernandez winning the discus (104’1″). The only other individual winner was Jose Leclerc in the mile (5:19), Jose also finished third in the 800 (2:16). Bryan Rivas was second in the 400 hurdles (64.3) and in the 400 (57.0). Senior Captain Johnny Gomez was second in the two mile (12:25). Alex Pedrero was second in the 110 high hurdles (19.1). Jose Aguiar finished second in the 800 (2:15). Lynn Tech has come a long way in the past couple of years. Their squad is well coached and has the reigning New England champion in the high jump.
This leaves the boys record at 5 – 3 as we head into our last week of league competition. Today we travel to undefeated Gr. Lowell and Saturday we are off to the CAC championship meet at Essex Tech.
The girls continued their winning ways against both Northeast (96 -38) and Lynn Tech (106-24). Against Northeast individual winners included: Amanda Dias in the 2 mile (13:41), Sylvia Martin in the 100 hurdles (18.38), Martin Simon in the 100 (13.22), 200 (27.39), and the triple jump (34′). Yarid Deras was a winner in the mile (6:37), Katherine Cabral won the 400 (62.67) and finished second in the 100 (13.4) as well as third in the high jump (4’2″), Alex Martinez won the Javelin (59′), Jazmin Castellon won the shot put (28’11”) and Xiana Herasme won the discus (72’10”), Jocelyn Post won the 800 (2:44) and finished second in the 400 hurdles (75.62). Other point scorers included Melanie Nguyen third in the 400 hurdles (80.09), third in the 100 hurdles (20.32) and third in the triple jump (25’6″). Wendy Becerra was second in the two mile (14:04). Cynthia Guzman was second in the mile (7:03) and Jessica Ponce was third (7:34). Owliyo Mohamud was second in the 400 (63.4) and Awa Bajinka was third (72.26). Emily Burgos was second in the 800 (2:59), Ana Davies was third in the 200 (29.81).
Against Lynn Tech our depth as a team showed as we swept or went first and second in every event except for 4. We had individual winners in every event with the exception of the Discus and High Jump. Individual winners included: Jocelyn Poste in the 400 hurdles (75:9) and the 800 (2:41.3), Yarid Deras in the 2 mile (14:03), Sylvia Martin in the 100 hurdles (19.7), Katherine Cabral in the 100 (13.3),400 (61.9), and the triple jump (29’6″), Owliyo Mohamud in the 200 (28.1), Martin Simon in the long jump (16’10.5″), and Alex Martinez in the Shot Put 29’4″ and in the Javelin 66’10”.
Most of our girls are peaking at the right time. If we can stay healthy this last week we should be able to put ourselves in a position to win the CAC dual meet title (yesterday v. Gr. Lowell) and fight for the CAC league meet title Saturday at Essex Tech. The girls record now stands at an undefeated 9-0.
This past Saturday was the State Coaches Invitational at Acton – Boxboro regional high school. This meet is open to schools from all divisions throughout the state and is a preview of the state meets to come. For the girls Owliyo Mohamud finished 20th out of 60 girls who qualified in the 400 in a time of 62.84. Katherine Cabral finished 26th out of 60 athletes in the 100 (13.51), 27th out of 45 in the 200 (27.03), and 21st in the long jump (15’4″). Martin Simon continues to shine on the state level. Martin finished 10th in the triple jump (33’3″) and took 6th in the long jump (16’2″).
