Good evening everyone. Here is the last two weeks of results.
The girls dropped the meet by a score of 60-24. Martine Simon was a double winner in the 55m (6.5) and the high jump (4’4″). Sylvia Agywaa was 2nd in the hurdles (8.7), Owliyo Mohamud was 2nd in the 300m (47.9), Jocelyn Poste was 3rd in the 1000m (3:43.6), Yarid Deras was 2nd in the mile (6:18.8), Amanda Diaz was 3rd in the 2 mile (13:07), and Alex Martinez was 2nd in the shot put, 27’11”.
Both the boys and girls fought very hard against this very deep, strong, and well coached team. It was a great day to race and our younger athletes learned a lot by facing this level of competition. I am very proud of their performance, this is the most points that we have taken from Malden in the last three years.
This past week was a good week for both the girls and the boys as both teams won victories over Medford and competed well at the state relay meet.
Against Medford the boys won by a score of 51-30. We took first place in every event with the exception of the 1000. Winners for the boys included Freshman Abraham Barrientos (first career win) in the 2mile (12:37), Alex Pedrero in the Hurdles (9.52), Nick Ieng in the dash (6.67) and the High Jump (5’4″), Adriel Cedano in the 300m (38.31), Isaac Colcord in the 600 (1:42) and Shot Put (34’9″), and Jose Leclerc in the mile (5:11). Other point getters included Bryan Rivas who took second in the hurdles as well as second in the shot put. Wuilfido Hernandez took 3rd in the 600, Kevin Umanzor took 2nd in the 1000 with teammate Wallid Elmellouki taking 3rd. This was great showing for our team with every athlete contributing in one way or another. When you dont have the biggest of teams this is the way you have to win meets. I am very proud of the effort and determination the boys have been showing this season so far.
The girls topped Medford by a final score of 49-21. The girls took first place in every event except the 600 and 1000. Winners included freshman Karina Avalos (first career win) in the 2mile, Sylvia Agyuwaa in the hurdles, Martine Simon in the dash (7.63) and the high jump (4’4″), Owliyo Mohamud in the 300 (45.16), Yarid Deras in the mile (6:25), and Masireh Ceesay in the shot put (28’2.75″). Other point getters included Litzy Rodriguez 3rd in the dash, Alexis Shillingford 2nd in the 300, Marcella Castillo 2nd in the 600, Raquel Estrada 2nd in the 1000, Alex Martinez second in the shot put and the mile, and Destiny Summa 3rd in the shot put. This was a great showing for the girls team considering it was missing many athletes for a variety of reasons. Its a good sign that the rest of the team was able to pull out a win.
Both boys and girls traveled to Reggie Lewis on friday to compete in the Division 2 State Relay meet. This meet features the best teams throughout the state. The girls sprint medley relay team finished 7th overall with great performances by Yarid Deras (800m, 2:41), Martine Simon (200m, 27.5), Sylvia Agyuwaa (200m, 30.0), and Owliyo Mohamud (400m, 62.75) with a total time of 4:41.41. The boys top relay was also the sprint medley which, like the girls, finished 7th overall. The team included Jose Leclerc (800m, 2:09.9), Nick Ieng (200m, 24.35), Bryan Rivas (200m, 24.92), and Adriel Cedano (400m, 54.0) for a total time of 3:53.39. Click here for full results.
