The Chelsea boy’s and girl’s cross country teams traveled to Pine Banks park in Melrose last Wednesday to compete against Mystic Valley Charter school. On the boy’s side Jose Leclerc, who was running in his first race of the year, teamed up with freshman Demitrius Martinez to go one, two for Chelsea. Leclerc’s time was 20:09 and Martinez’s time was 20:26. “Jose and Demitrius have been competing and pushing each other in practice so it was good for them to get in a race together against an opponent. They put us in a very good position to win the race getting the top two spots” says Coach Fay. Mystic Valley had six of the next eight runners but it wasn’t enough to prevent Chelsea’s first win of the year. Senior captain Adriel Cedano was fifth overall with a finishing kick that enabled him to pass two Mystic Valley runners and ultimately clinched the meet for Chelsea. Junior Alex Pedrero was eight overall for Chelsea and Abraham Barrientos and Wuilfido Hernandez finished eleventh and twelfth in the same time at 24:00 flat. We only have one senior in our top seven so our future looks promising. We finally have everyone back and running which showed today because we were a much deeper team today than last week. It was good to get our first victory of the season and it will be interesting to see what our top guys can go against the rest of the league. The boy’s are now 1-3.
On the girl’s side sophomore Yarid Deras remained undefeated with a convincing win against Mystic Valley’s top runner. Deras ran 23:41 on the hilly 2.9 mile course to win by over a minute and a half in the race. At the beginning one of the MV girl’s took off and had a pretty sizable lead but Yarid didn’t panic and gradually reduced the gap and dominated the race after she passed her. Finishing in third place was sophomore Jocelyn Poste who was a mere four second behind the second place finisher running 25:16. Senior captain Melanie Nguyen was fourth overall for Chelsea running a time of 26:08. Unfortunately for the Chelsea girl’s, Mystic Valley had the next seven runners to clinch the meet. Freshman Karina Avalos finished in twelfth place and freshman Sandra Tun was sixteenth overall. Mystic Valley won by the score of 28-31 to bring the lady Red Devil’s record to an even 2-2 on the year. It’s frustrating that twice in a row that we have had three of the top four spots and then lost the meet. However, we need to go forward and try to close the gap from thee to four to be more competitive in the league.
Next week the girls are facing Greater Lawrence and Notre Dame in Tyngsboro and the boys will be facing Greater Lawrence. This will be a big individual meet for Yarid both of these teams have top runners in the league.
