The boy’s and girl’s cross country teams opened up with crosstown rival Everett last Wednesday, 9/7 on a hot, muggy day at Admiral’s Hill. The girl’s won by the score of 15-50 and the boy’s lost by the score of 19-36.
Sophomore Yarid Monzon Deras won in a personal best time of 23:30 on the 3.1 mile course. “Yarid has had a great summer of training and it’s something you can’t hide. Either you ran over the summer or you didn’t. I wish everyone had the same intensity for their training that Yarid does” says coach Fay. Finishing in second place was senior captain Melanie Nguyen in a time of 26:18 and sophomore Jocelyn Poste was third running 27:19. Rounding up the scoring for the lady red devils were freshman Sandra Tun in fifth place, freshman Anna Bernal in sixth place and freshman Karina Avalos in seventh place. “We have a very young team and are hoping to build on our first win of the year.” The next meet is Wednesday 9/14 with PMA and Whittier coming to Chelsea.
The boy’s were on the wrong end of a 19-36 score. Everett claimed the first three places, while Chelsea claimed five of the next seven spots. It was not enough however to beat Everett. Freshman Demitrius Martinez was the first Chelsea runner finishing in fourth place. Demetrius ran very well for his first race. He stayed in control and ran a very steady, consistent race finishing the 3.1 mile course in 20:59. In sixth place was Alex Pedrero, who also was running his first cross country race. He finished in a time of 22:35. Senior captain Adriel Cedano was eighth running 22:48 for the red devils. Abraham Barrientos was ninth running 25:05 and senior captain Issac Concord was tenth in a time of 25:50. We are also a pretty young team and hopefully in the next meet or two we will have everyone back and ready to run strong.
