Last Thursday both boys and girls traveled to Somerville where both teams fought hard in losses. The girls lost by a score of 54-32. The lone individual winners for the Lady Red Devils were sophomores Amanda Dias (2 mile, 13:40) and Yarid Deras (mile, 6:15). Both girls continue to have amazing seasons with each only suffering one loss in dual meet action with one meet to go. The 4×400 team of Martine Simon, Awa Bajinka, Jecelyn Poste, and Owliyo Mohammud were also victorious in a time of 4:50.1. We were able to keep the meet close by scoring second in many events including Sylvia Agyeiwaa in the hurdles, Martine Simon in the dash, Owliyo Mohammud in the 300, Jocelyn Poste in the 1000 and Alex Martinez in the shot put. Marcella Castillo placed 3rd in the 600 and Simon took 3rd in the high jump to round out scoring. Somerville is always a tough and well coached team. We did well for ourselves but once again our lack of depth has come back to hurt us. This Wednesday the girls have their last dual meet competition of the season against CAC rival Gr. Lawrence. With a win the girls could finish the season with a 3-2 winning record. This coming Saturday our top girls travel to Reggie Lewis for the State Coaches Invitational meet.
The boys fell to Somerville by a score of 67-19. Somerville is undefeated this year and we knew this was going to be a tough fight. The individual winners for Chelsea were Jose Leclerc in the mile (5:13) and Nick Ieng in the shot put (36’3.75″). Second place finishes went to Abraham Barrienton (2mile, 12:37), Adriel Cedano (300, 35.39) and Nick Ieng (dash). Rounding out the scoring was Isaac Colcord in the 600 (1:27.8) and Kevin Umanzor in the 1000 (2:45). Like the girls, Somerville boys are tremendously coached and will be GBL champions this meet. All of the races were close and exciting. It was great to see the level of fight that our boys showed today. Like the girls, the boys face CAC rival Gr. Lawrence this Wednesday and the top competitors will head to the State Coaches Invitational this coming Saturday.
