Good evening Red Devil Track fans,
Both girls and boys team came off tough losses against a tremendous Somerville team to successfully compete in the Winter Festival Track meet at the Reggie Lewis Track Center this past Sunday. The meet featured over 1,500 athletes from over the state.
On the girls side, our top finisher was senior Mariama Kamara who finished 4th overall in the dash with a state qualifying time 7.67. This was a great start to the season for Kamara whose fourth place is even more impressive when you see that there were over 100 competitors in the field. Also qualifying for the state meet was the girls 4 x 200m relay team of Kamara, Martin Simon, Awa Bajinka, and Katherine Cabral. The foursome finished 5th overall in a time of 1:54.29. Senior Katherine Cabral placed 11th (out of 112 competitors) in the 300 with a time of 44.31. Freshman Jocelyn Poste continues to improve in the 1000, finishing 17th in a time of 3:30.92. In the shot put Senior Jazmin Castallon finished 9th overall with a throw of 27’2″. This was a great day for our girls team. This team has a great combination of veteran stars and young talent. The season looks very bright.
On the boys side, the top individual finisher was Alezio DaSilva who finished 6th in the long jump with a jump of 19’3/4″ inch. The jump just misses the state qualifying mark. What makes this more impressive is that we have no indoor facility to train for the long jump. Junior Adriel Cedano also jumped well finishing 14th, out of 67 competitors, with a jump of 18’6″. Senior Jose Aguiar finished 17th in the 600 with a time of 1:30.42. The highlight of the day was the 4 x 200 team of Cedano, DaSilva, Aguiar, and Junior Nick Ieng who qualified for the state meet by finishing 12th with a time of 1:37.98. The boys team continues to improve every meet, in a lot of ways we still do not know how good this team can be.
Competing at Reggie Lewis really gives our athletes an opportunity to run on a premier track against premier competition. For many of our younger athletes this is a great learning experience. For our veterans this is an opportunity to run some good times early in the season and qualify for the state meet in some cases. A lot of credit needs to go to the coaching staff for the success we are having early in the season. Coach Hillary Paul, with the help of Coach Weaver, has the distance runners achieving personal bests every meet. Coach Jenna Klemonski has been essential in running the sprint workouts and helping the younger runners find their way at meets. Coach Aronson has the throwers improving meet after meet. We have made lots of progress in the jumps with the guidance of recent Tufts All-American Coach Kanku Kabango. We are very luck to have so many coaches committed to the success of our athletes.
Next on the schedule for the Red Devil’s is the Speed Classic at Reggie Lewis and the GBL Freshman Sophomore meet at Somerville High School. Both meets are on 12/30/15.
