Both boys and girls opened the season with solid wins over a well coached Northeast squad. The boys won by a score of 86-43. Senior Adriel Cedano had a big day finishing first in the 100m (11.65), 400, (54.76), triple jump (39’1″), and second in the high jump (5’6″). Other winners included Alex Pedrero in the long jump (16’6″) as well as the 400m hurdles (69.1), and a second place in the 110m high hurdles (18.7). Isaac Colcord was also a double winner in both the shot put (35’5.5″) and the discus (86’8″). In addition Isaac placed third in the 110 high hurdles and second in the 400m (57.79). Nick Ieng was a double winner in the javelin (94’8″) and the 200m (24.50). In addition, Ieng was runner up in the shot put with a toss of 35’4″. Jose Leclerc was a double winner in the 2 mile (12:30) and the 800 (2:14). Rounding out the first place performances was Walid El Mellouki in the mile with a time of 5:30. In total, Chelsea captured 12 first place finished out of the 14 events. The number of triple and double winners shows how hard the kids have worked in the off season and how willing every member of this team is to do whatever it takes to win. In the 800m and the mile we were able to sweep, going first, second, and third.
Also placing for Chelsea included: Abraham Barrientos (3rd in the 2 mile), Justin Turner (2nd in the mile), Yosuf Rabin (3rd in the mile), Wilfido Hernandez (2nd in the 800), Hilcias De La Cruz (3rd in the 800), Luqman Shariff (3rd in the 200m), and Tony Bui (2nd in the javelin). Great start to the season for this team.
The girls squad captured first place in 11 of the 14 events on route to a 90 – 45 victory. Sylvia Ageiwaa was a double winner taking first in the 400 hurdles (73.5) and the 100 hurdles (18.52). In addition Sylvia finished third in the long jump with a jump of 14’2″. Amanda Dias was a double winner in the 2 mile and the 1 mile. Martine Simon took first in three events. She was a winner in the 100 (13.26), 200 (27.87), and triple jump (33’6″). Also winning for the Red Devils were Xiana Herme in the discus (78’6″), Alex Martinez in the shot put (29’6), Jocelyn Poste in the 800 (2:54), and Owliyo Mohamud (65.56). We were able to complete sweeps in the shot put with Masireh Ceesay taking second and Tracy Flores taking third, as well as in the discus with Flores taking 2nd and Ceesay taking third. The throws events will be a big strength for our team as the year goes forward. Its great to be this deep and this well coached.
Other scoring points were: Karina Avalos 2nd in the 2 mile, Sandra Tun 3rd in the 100 hurdles, Isha Osman 2nd in the 100, Cynthia Mancia second in the mile, Awa Bajinka 3rd in the 400, Marcela Castillo 3rd in the 800, Alexis Shillingford 3rd in the 200m, and Jessica Martinez 2nd in the javelin.
This was a great start for this team. Northeast has some good athletes and is well coached. The girls are still improving. Both the boys and girls are hosting Gr. Lawrence next Tuesday at home. This will be our last home meet for a while.
