Now the the Cross-country season is several weeks underway, let us recap how the Chelsea team is performing so far! In the first meet of the season, the red devils held a tri-meet against PMA and Whittier. On the boys side, Chelsea went up 2-0, beating out PMA with a score of 16-43, and narrowly beating out Whittier, 26-29. Running 18:54 in his first 5k of the season, junior Oscar Amaya led the way for Chelsea, finishing second overall. Whittier would take 1st and 3rd, but Senior Jazmany Reyes, sophomore Alex Estrada, and sophomore Johnny Maldonado would finish 4th-6th helping solidify the win. Rounding out the scoring for Chelsea was senior Joseph Teruel.
Unfortunately, due to injuries and other circumstances, Chelsea was not able to field a full girls team, but the three that did had some strong performances. Junior Percy Melgar finished second overall, followed by senior Ana Chang in 3rd, and sophomore Gabby Rivas in 5th overall. Both Ana and Gabby were running in their first ever XC race.
The following week, Chelsea hosted Mystic Valley. The boys would improve their record to 3-0 as they won 21-37. Reyes had a big improvement from the previous week, and just outkicking a Whittier athlete who had the led the race from the start until the very end to finish first in 18:17. This time would tie Reyes for the third best ever time on the current Chelsea XC course. Also finishing sub-19 were sophomore Ian Padilla (18:32), and Amaya (18:36), who finished 3rd and 4th. Sophomores Ruben Padilla (19:14) and Johnny Maldonado (19:25) rounded out the scoring for the red devils. Also finishing sub-20 was sophomore Hikerth Santizo, who was running in his first ever XC race. The boys team is very deep right now, which bodes well for the rest of the season. Injuries and more continue to hurt the girls, who had two runners this past meet. Rivas would run almost 3 full minutes faster than the previous meet to finish 2nd overall, while Sade Rosales, who had been dealing with an injury for most of the season, finished 4th overall.
Chelsea will host a big meet this Wednesday as Gr. Lawrence, Minuteman, and Lynn Tech come to visit. Expect more updates as the season continues!
